FAQ: Problems with Windows NT LPR port

Problem: I am using the Windows LPR port (or Standard TCP/IP Port) to send print documents to RPM. If I quickly submit more than 11 jobs, RPM waits a long time before receiving subsequent documents.

Answer: You can install and use INTELLIscribe to send more than 11 print jobs. This softare can be downloaded for a free trial.

By default, the LPR Port and Standard TCP/IP Port are configured to send documents using source ports 721-731. The destination port 515 is not configurable. The problem occurs because, by default, it takes 4 minutes for used TCP/IP ports to become available for use again.

This Microsoft KB article gives instructions on resolving the issue. We recommend following method 2, which resolves the issue for all LPR and Standard TCP/IP Ports.

You may also need to "relax the 'port-in-range' requirement" in RPM. To do this, follow these steps:

  1. In RPM, choose "LPD Security..." from the "Options" menu.
  2. Check the box stating "Relax the 'Port in Range' requirement"
  3. Press OK
